Transplant Type - Kidney
We are thrilled to report that John received his transplant on February 8, 2011!
Our story began during a routine check-up in 2005 when John's doctor noticed signs of kidney damage, presumably from medications he was prescribed for gout. The doctor carefully monitored John's health and made changes to his diet and prescriptions.
Unfortunately, John's kidney function continued to decline, and he was diagnosed with end-stage renal failure in 2009. He required dialysis treatments, and doctors said a kidney transplant was his only hope for a second chance at life.
Thankfully, his sister was a match and donated one of her kidneys to save her brother's life. We want to report that she is doing wonderfully since the surgery.
John is thrilled to have his strength back. Many of the things he was unable to do before his transplant, he has been able to enjoy this summer such as swimming and riding jet skis. His wife, Kelly, and their two beautiful sons are so happy to have dad back to play with. Their goal is to continue John's post-transplant care to keep him healthy, strong, and living a normal life with his family.
With his kidney transplant behind him, John and his family are so grateful for the health coverage that enabled him to receive his hospital care. They are also thankful for the loving and supportive friends and family members who have assisted with the additional costs of his medical expenses. What a great feeling to have such a tremendous part of his journey finally behind him.
Looking to the future, John and his family are faced with the lifelong task of affording his daily anti-rejection medications and continued after-care. Many times it seems daunting even with health coverage, the additional costs are thousands of dollars each month. Family and friends have been proactive in holding successful fundraisers and continue to come up with fun and creative ways to alleviate some of this burden and bring a joy back to life.
